Ghoom Monastery: A Spiritual Retreat in the Himalayas
Ghoom Monastery, Darjeeling
The renowned Buddhist monastery Ghoom Monastery, also known as Yiga Choeling Monastery, is situated in the picturesque hill town of Ghoom, close to Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. This monastery, which is located at an elevation of 2,258 meters (7,407 feet), is a well-liked tourist site since it has significant historical and spiritual value. The great Tibetan Buddhist Lama Sherab Gyatso's disciple, the Mongolian monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, founded the monastery in 1850. Gyatso established Ghoom Monastery with the intention of disseminating Buddhism and spirituality, and it swiftly rose to popularity as a significant Buddhist learning institution in the area. It serves as a representation of faith, serenity, and cultural legacy today
The walls echo with centuries-old mantras, infusing the atmosphere with a powerful sense of reverence. The statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas stand tall, emanating an aura of wisdom and compassion. The morning prayer ceremony, held daily at around 4:00 a.m., is a breathtaking sight to behold. As the first rays of the sun pierce through the misty mountain air, the monks gather in the prayer hall, dressed in vibrant robes. Their chants, accompanied by the resonant tones of traditional instruments, fill the air, creating a sublime experience that touches the depths of the soul. Witnessing this sacred ritual is an opportunity for visitors to glimpse the devotion and dedication of the monks, and to immerse themselves in the spiritual essence of Ghoom Monastery. Beyond its religious significance, Ghoom Monastery offers a gateway to the natural splendor of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
